Hot Pavement = Hot Paws!

Hot Pavement = Hot Paws!

Hot Pavement = Hot Paws!

Hot Pavement = Hot Paws! 🐾

When summer heats up, so do sidewalks—and your pup’s paws are more sensitive than you might think. At Max & Rex, we’re all about keeping tails wagging safely, so here’s your go-to guide for protecting those precious paw pads during warm-weather walks.

Use protective gear like Dog Crocs or Paw Balm to create a barrier.

   Smart Steps for Safer Walks

Hot pavement can burn in seconds, but a few simple habits make all the difference:

  • Follow the 7-Second Rule
Place the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your dog.
  • Walk at Cooler Times
Aim for early mornings or later evenings. Midday (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.) is when surfaces are at their hottest.
  • Choose Cooler Paths
Stick to grass, dirt trails, or shaded areas whenever possible—avoid asphalt and concrete when temperatures rise.

    Gear Up for Protection

Sometimes, a little extra protection goes a long way:

  • Dog Booties
Provide a full barrier against hot surfaces—great for longer walks or extreme heat.
  • Paw Balms & Wax
Help create a protective layer and keep paw pads moisturized (best for mild to moderate heat).
  • Keep Paws Healthy
Trim excess paw hair, check pads regularly, and keep them hydrated to prevent cracking.
  • Don’t Forget Water 💧
Bring water along—hydration helps keep your dog’s skin and paws resilient.

    Signs of Burned Paw Pads

Keep an eye out for these warning signs after walks:

  • Limping or refusing to walk
  • Excessive licking or chewing of paws
  • Red, blistered, flaky, or darkened pads
  • Missing or damaged skin

What to Do If Paws Get Burned

If you suspect a burn:

  • Move your dog to a cool area immediately
  • Rinse paws gently with cool (not ice-cold) water
  • Avoid ice directly on the skin
  • Contact your veterinarian for proper care

    Quick Paw Safety Recap

Protect your pup by walking during cooler hours, sticking to grassy areas, using the 7-second test, and adding protective gear when needed. A little prevention goes a long way in keeping your furry friend happy, healthy, and ready for the next adventure.

Because at Max & Rex…every step matters. 🐾
