Back to School, Back to Routine: Helping Your Pet Adjust 🐾

Backpacks are packed, alarms are set, and the kids are heading back to school. Parents are getting back to work schedules, too—but what about the family members with paws?

After a summer of extra attention and activity, dogs and cats can notice when the house suddenly gets quieter. Changes in routine may leave some pets feeling bored, restless, clingy, or simply wondering where everyone went.

Signs Your Pet May Be Adjusting

Watch for changes like:

• Waiting by doors or windows
• Following you more than usual
• Sleeping on your child’s bed or belongings
• Increased meowing, barking, or restlessness
• Changes in appetite or bathroom habits

Make the Transition Easier

A little consistency can go a long way. Keep meals, walks, and playtime on a predictable schedule whenever possible. A short walk or play session before everyone leaves can help burn off extra energy.

While you’re away, provide safe enrichment such as puzzle toys, treat toys, scratching posts, cat trees, or a cozy window perch. For pets especially attached to the kids, leaving a recently worn T-shirt nearby can provide a familiar, comforting scent.

And don’t forget the best part of the day—coming home! Create a simple after-school or after-work tradition, whether it’s a walk, playtime, brushing, or a few extra cuddles.

Pets may not understand why the family’s schedule changed, but with patience, routine, and a little extra love, they’ll learn one important thing:
